Weekly Update: v0.17.6 - the War Map!


The weekly update has been released!

This week it's the introduction of the WAR ROOM! Plus the interactive War Map! This will be expanded on greatly in the coming updates, so stay tuned! Also, added Ami to the paperdoll system and tweaked the UI. I was hoping to get more out this week, but building that map really kicked my ass! I hope you enjoy! :)

CHANGELOG:

  • War Room: New room: the War Room! Talk to Jessica (Front Door on Sunday afternoon) and select "Strategise with Jessica"
  • War Map: New mechanic - the interactive War Map! Just for information right now, but you will be able to plan attacks and conquer territory with it very soon!
  • Paperdolls: New paperdoll for Ami (Dress her up at the wardrobe in your room)!
  • Misc: Removed the Church from the property listings since you can't buy it yet and it was worrying people about to do the Act Two finale
  • Misc: Moved the Manor nav UI around a bit again. The number of buttons on this UI is too damn high!
  • Bug: Typo stuff... or Gwen And Ami: Kid Detectives! Either one

This game is not what I ever would've expected it to be. The details, the story, the feels. i got the game a few weeks ago and its taken me weeks, WEEKS to catch up with the current update and its been, well, one hell of an emotion ride. I've gotten completely enveloped in the lore and the relationships with each girl and i cant wait for whats to come in act 3. One thing i hope for, is that our sweet little "wheels" as pixie puts it can recover. I put wheels instead of her real name for spoiler sake. But let me tell ya, i wanted to cry, if she cant be healed i'm going to hold a meeting where we can all get together and riot.
Sincerely tho. you've done an amazing job and i wholeheartedly look forward to whats to come. I cannot wai

Aww, thank you! That seriously means a lot to hear :) This has been my first attempt at really making a game and putting it out there, and the reception has been so humbling and amazing. As a solo dev it really makes my whole week to know that people are playing and enjoying CK.

I hope that you continue to enjoy everything I have planned for CK (and its sequels) and other games I have in mind for the future!

One thing... it took me an embarrassingly long time to notice the [X] button to close the district view on the war map.  Maybe make that a different color so it doesn't blend into the background so well? >_>  Might just be a "me" thing, but I just kept rolling back (with the mouse wheel) and having to go back into the war map, because the [X] was camouflaged so well.

Still, recoloring that button is of minimal importance, so no worries if you love your yellow-on-slightly-lighter-shade-of-yellow color scheme. :P  I'll deal with it.

The UI for the war map will likely undergo multiple iterations - I'm not happy with how it looks right now, honestly, but I only had two days to build the whole thing ;P I agree that the yellow-on-yellow is not the best idea, haha.

I'll likely do another design pass once the battle system is in the game so that I can ensure they're both thematically consistent.

This is going to be interesting, considering my favorite games lately are Stronghold Crusader and Age of Empires

Also How is Going to be the Combat System?,Will We Get Individual Units? Each one with the Specific attack power etc.?

The combat system isn't 100% done yet - I'm taking some time to properly iterate it, so the details are somewhat in flux.

The current version I have puts you in control of the MC, with one selected girl as a support fighter, and allows you to select your "squad" of soldiers who you will fight with. The girl will provide passive bonuses as well as a random activated ability (eg. Hana will give you a passive boost to HP and DEF and a random chance for a massive boost to ATK) and the squad will alter what moves you have available to you and will work better or worse against other troop types.

I might extend the system to allow multiple squads to fight at the same time, but at the end of the day CK is a visual novel built on a visual novel engine and you can only push the system so far before it snaps like a twig :P

It's just a changelog "typo" thing - weekly updates for over three years has driven me quite mad. Although... spin-off Kid Detectives game..? Maybe!

Gwen's healing - if she gets healed - won't be for a while. You live with the consequences of your actions!

Ami will wear your dictated outfit around the house starting from the next update. Right now she's super busy keeping everyone safe.

Wait, you're saying there's a chance to not have Gwen in a wheelchair after???

No, that's going to happen no matter your choices. It's an object lesson to MC that he can't just "wing it" like he's been doing. His enemies are taking things very seriously and if he doesn't step up then the people around him are going to get badly hurt... or worse.

I do feel bad that Gwen and Chloe have to keep teaching him lessons, though. Those girls have not had a great time :P

Arc, fyi on mobile the X to close the little panels that give info about each region is behind the Hide and the Save so it's a bit hard to press the X.

Maybe relocating the X to like another corner of the little panel could do the trick.

Thanks for letting me know - I may remove the quickmenu while players are on the War Map. Apart from anything else, it might mess up saves if you save there :P

Have you thought about adding a progression bar and or something for each area, like something to tell us we have done everything in that area and there isn't anything new left. I think that would very useful.

You mean throughout the entire game, or specifically for the War Map?

If it's the latter then the War Map already has that feature built-in, and if it's the former then that's functionally impossible - there's too many events that take place over multiple areas, it would lead to constant "hey, I'm at 90% and I don't know how to do the last 10! You need to put a walkthrough in the game!" and I'd need to constantly update it as I added new events.

Plus, it would drastically reduce the community aspect, where people are currently sharing fun little things they've found.

Yeah im on about the former specialy for act 2, but maybe something for when ever you finish the game.

When consulting with Jessica:
"Do you when to attack and when to retreat?" Seems to be a "know" missing here.

And while I'm here "Get familiar with the War Map, and the various districts." This comma is being inappropriate and needs to be removed.

I also think the War Map really really needs a legend.
